The Washington Demons nearly sent their whole team to the state tournament, but there will be at least one golfer in orange and black at next week’s Class 3A championships after junior Roman Roth not only qualified for state, but he also was the individual champion at a district tournament yesterday at Bos Landen Golf Club in Pella. Roth followed up winning an individual sectional title last week by shooting an even-par round of 72, including a one-under 35 over his final nine holes.

Roth finished six shots clear of second place on his way to his sixth tournament victory of the season. Washington was just four strokes shy of qualifying as a team for state, but they finished third behind Williamsburg and Knoxville. Drew Conrad had the Demons’ second-best score with a round of 80, while fellow freshman Rajan Roth shot 83 and junior Luke Beenblossom finished with a 91.

The district tournament is only the third that Washington did not win as a team, ending their season. The Demons will graduate one senior in Isaac Vetter. As for Roth, he’ll take part in the 3A tournament Monday and Tuesday of next week, playing two 18-hole rounds at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.
