Two Southeast Iowa Super Conference girls’ golf teams will take a crack at getting to this year’s Class 1A state championships when they compete in the Region 5 finals today at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in Wapello. The Highland Huskies and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves will look to build on their top-three team scores from Friday’s Region 5C tournament in New London.

Highland will look to a pair of youngsters to summon strong performances. Sophomore Danika Kraus was fourth at New London with a score of 97 strokes and has had an 18-hole round as low as 90 this season. Husky freshmen Adisyn Prottsman and Emerson Schultz have both had sub-100 rounds earlier this spring, while sophomore Adeline Krotz, junior Kelsi Cerny and senior Jenna Waters have all averaged scores of 108 or better per 18 holes.

Winfield-Mount Union senior Isabel Kann posted a season-best 101 in New London to finish sixth and will hope for even better today. Fellow seniors Lilly Humphreys and Anna Anderson will try to power the Wolves on to the 1A state tournament in Ames. In addition to Wapello and New London, WMU and Highland will have get past golfers from Iowa Valley, HLV, Belle Plaine, BGM, Alburnett, West Branch, Durant, Regina Catholic, North Cedar and Calamus-Wheatland.
