The Washington Demons started the girls’ soccer playoffs with a win and achieved a milestone for the program in the process yesterday. Washington knocked off Mediapolis 3-0 in the Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinals at Washington Wellness Park, racing out to the lead thanks to a goal from junior Audrey Anderson in the fifth minute.

After sophomore Alyvia Anderson was fouled just inside the penalty box in the 26th minute, Audrey Anderson buried a penalty kick to double the Demon lead going into halftime. Despite getting off well over 20 shots and dominating possession, Washington added just one more tally in the second half on a circus shot by freshman Angeline Anderson. But Demon head coach Mason Quigley was confident that his team’s attacking and aggressive play worked to perfection when he spoke with KCII Sports after the victory.

“We were trying to set the tone early,” Quigley said. “A big thing I’ve talked [about] with them is the first 10 [minutes]. That’s going to dictate what the game’s going to look like, and then we can adjust from there. I think we did a phenomenal job coming out early and applying that pressure, and we put up a lot of shots today. Holy cow, it was a lot.

Washington claims their fifth of the last six matches to improve to 11-5, a win total that now represents the most in a single season in school history. The Demons advance to face Davenport Assumption in the 1A Region 4 semifinals Tuesday night.
