The Washington City Council will move forward with plans to turn the four-lane road into a three-lane on Highway 92. The decision was made at the council meeting on Tuesday evening after a discussion was had about the safety of the changes. Council member Illa Earnest spoke on how adding a turn lane will be beneficial. “I would like to see us move forward, I think it’s really, really important. I think our constituents will be really, really happy with that stop light. I think since they’re used to the three lanes on West Madison, I don’t see a big problem with East Washington going to three, either. And they may find it very convenient to have that turn lane; people are used to it now.” Another approved part of the changes is for the addition of a traffic signal and crosswalks at Hwy 92 and N. 12th Avenue. The Iowa Department of Transportation previously converted the Western half of Hwy 92 into a three-lane section; this would complete the three-lane conversion through the City of Washington.
