The No. 2 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team has tested themselves against a tough schedule to start 2023. After knocking off Class 4A Davenport West in Wellman Monday 6-4, they traveled to Johnston Tuesday to meet the defending Class 4A State Champion and No. 3 ranked Dragons. Johnston scored a 7-0 win. The home team plated two in the second, scored once in the third and strung together a big four run fourth to finish the scoring. The Dragons outhit the Hawks 7-3 in the game with three extra base knocks, while drawing four walks.

The Golden Hawk bats were quieted by Carter Woollums who recorded the win going five frames and striking out nine. Mid-Prairie was called out on strikes 12 times in the contest. Alex Bean took the loss on the hill for Mid-Prairie tossing three and a third, giving up seven runs, six earned on six hits, walking four and striking out three. Brady Weber finished in relief, surrending a hit and punching out three. Karson Grout had a pair of singles and Brock Harland added a base knock. The loss drops Mid-Prairie to 1-1 ahead of a contest tonight at Iowa City Regina.
