One of the Highland girls’ golfers is headed to state. Husky junior Kelsi Cerny qualified individually for the Class 1A state championships by finishing tied for fifth overall at the Region 5 finals Wednesday at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in Wapello. Cerny shot a 20-over-par round of 92, her best 18-hole round of the season, sending her on to this year’s 1A state tournament next Thursday and Friday at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Ames.
Highland very nearly qualified for state as a team. The Huskies were third with a total score of 404 strokes, finishing 27 behind second-place West Branch. Freshman Adisyn Prottsman just missed the top 10 by shooting a 99, while sophomores Adeline Krotz and Danika Kraus fired rounds of 106 and 107, respectively.
Winfield-Mount Union competed at the Region 5 finals and was fifth in team scoring. The Wolves were led by seniors Alli Humphreys and Isabel Kann, who each shot 109. Fellow WMU senior Anna Anderson added a 114.
