The Washington City Council approved a code of ethics for elected officials at their meeting on Tuesday. Council member Elaine Moore gave her thoughts on why the code should be put in place, “I believe that we are held to a higher standard and that our behavior, we need to behave and lead by example. And this gives us, this just sets boundaries for us to remind us that we are held to that higher standard.” The code states that The City of Washington elected officials shall hold each member to the highest standards of ethical, professional behavior. To understand the role of the council as a policy-making body. To learn and consistently to use designated channels when conducting city business. To refrain from actions and involvement that might prove embarrassing to the City of Washington and to resign if such actions or involvements develop. To make judgments based on what is best for the organization as a whole. Penalties for breach of the code include removal of the elected official from office by a resolution passed by a vote of two-thirds of the city council, provided the notice of such a proposed resolution is given with the notice calling the meeting.
