The Washington Demons got a victory in their softball home opener, defeating the Columbus Wildcats 10-6 last night. Washington’s first-inning run stood up until the top of the third, when a three-run home run by Columbus sophomore Lily Coil capped off a four-run frame to put the Wildcats on top.

But the Demons would rally, scoring twice in the third, four times in the fourth and one time in the fifth to go in front. The Wildcats got two back on a pair of Washington errors in the sixth, but junior outfielder Emery Walton’s two-out, two-run single in the same inning created enough cushion to hold off Columbus.

Walton finished with three hits, including two doubles and two runs scored. Sophomore pitcher Isabella Salazar got the complete-game victory, striking out seven. Washington head coach Ben Obermann told KCII Sports after the game that his team is showing a lot of resiliency early in the season.

“I’ve told them the last two nights,” Obermann said, “game one yesterday, we get down 7-3, we come back, we win 8-7. Last night, game two, we get down 4-1, we get an opportunity to have the tying run at third base. Tonight, they get a big four-spot, and you just know our kids, they’re showing what we’re made of. Our character, our drive. They believe in one another.”

The Demons have won two of their first three games and will be back on the diamond tonight hosting Marion. Columbus drops to 0-2 and travels to face Lone Tree tomorrow.
