washington-baseball-2-2

Washington High School baseball not only picked up its first victory of the season last night, but the Demons swept a doubleheader with Mount Pleasant at Dick Sojka Memorial Field to begin conference play. In game one, Washington took advantage of four walks yielded by Mount Pleasant pitching in the first inning to score twice, and they would tack on two more runs in the third.

The Panthers’ only run and only hit of the game came in the fourth, as Demon starting pitcher Issac Vetter twirled a gem. The senior gave up just the one hit and no earned runs in five innings while striking out four for a 4-1 victory. Junior Luke Beenblossom also got a six-out save.

Mount Pleasant grabbed the initial lead in the back half of the doubleheader, but Washington responded to go up 2-1 in the second inning. After the Panthers tied the game in the top of the fourth, Demon catcher Caleb Zieglowsky hammered a two-out, two-run double in the bottom half of the inning that put Washington up for good. A five-run fifth ultimately put away the victory, although the Demons would have to hold off a late charge from Mount Pleasant to win 9-8.

Zieglowsky finished game two with two hits and three total runs batted in. Fellow junior Noah Griener had two hits, two runs scored and one driven in. Leadoff hitter Luke Beenblossom cracked a two-run single in the fifth and scored twice, but the five-through-nine hitters in the Washington lineup scored the other seven runs.

Sophomore starting pitcher Conner Leyden picked up the victory, giving up two runs on four hits in four innings. Washington now prepares for a series sweep of their Southeast Conference rivals, as their next game is at Mount Pleasant tomorrow night, which you can hear starting at 7 on 106.1 FM KCII.
