Washington Demon softball kept their strong start to the season rolling by winning both games of a doubleheader they hosted with conference rival Mount Pleasant yesterday evening. It took a while for both lineups to crack the scoreboard in the first game, with Mount Pleasant finally scoring the game’s first run in the top of the third inning. But Washington had an immediate answer ready, posting eight runs in the bottom half to seize a lead the Demons would never lose en route to a 12-3 win.

Washington finished with 11 hits in game one, including three of them and three runs scored from sophomore outfielder Ella Greiner. Freshman catcher Leighton Salazar and sophomore infielder Lauren Hinrichsen had two hits and two runs batted in each, while Salazar added three stolen bases. Starting pitcher Bella Salazar got the win, as the sophomore gave up no earned runs on four hits over four innings and piled up six strikeouts.

Game two was an even more dominant effort from the Demons, as they scored four times in the first inning and seven runs in the second on their way to a 13-1 victory that took only three innings. Bella Salazar and eighth-grader Colbie Greiner each had three hits, including a double, and combined for five runs scored and three driven in. Sophomore Halle Cuddeback pitched all three innings to earn her first win.

Washington not only begins Southeast Conference play unbeaten, but the Demons are now 5-1 overall, their best start to a season since going 4-1 in 2017. Washington will finish up their conference series with Mount Pleasant tomorrow, but the Demons are back in action tonight hosting Knoxville for another doubleheader.
