Beginning Monday, the Fairfield Community School District is offering their Summer Food Program for students in southeast Iowa.

Food Service Director for Fairfield, Stephanie Hawkins, explained the program to KCII, “Starting June 5, because we are considered rural with the USDA, we will have a summer food program that will be bagged meals. So it’ll be seven breakfasts, seven lunches, a majority of it is frozen so that it’s a heat and eat kind of thing for the kids. Any child two to eighteen can participate in this program. It’s not based on any income at all. We just have to have a parent, guardian, or student pick up that meal.”

The program runs for nine weeks this summer. Students are not required to live in Fairfield or be registered in the Fairfield Community School District. Meals can be picked up weekly at Fairfield Middle School from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays, or from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays.
