The Highland Huskies picked up a pair of victories on the road at Lone Tree in conference play on the diamond Thursday night. Highland softball won its fourth straight by scoring three runs right away in the first inning and never slowing down en route to defeating Lone Tree 11-0 in five innings.
Junior first baseman Payton Brun led the Husky lineup with four hits, including a double and a home run, and collected four runs batted in. Senior second baseman Abby Stransky also had a double and a homer and drove in two along with scoring twice, while sophomore third baseman Lilly Barre had two hits and two runs scored. Senior pitcher Jessica Kraus allowed just one hit over five innings and struck out nine in the circle to help Highland improve to 4-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 7-4 overall.
Husky baseball also started fast against Lone Tree Thursday night, getting two runs each in the second and third inning and never taking their foot off the gas pedal in an 11-2 victory. Catcher Garret Beeson had two hits, one run scored and one driven in, while fellow eighth-grader Landon Roling also finished with two hits and scored twice. Senior Peyton Yeggy got the victory on the mound, pitching five innings and giving up just one hit against 10 striketouts. Highland vaults to 3-3 in the Super Conference North and stops a four-game losing streak overall to reach a record of 5-6.
