The Washington Demons continue to fire on all cylinders in conference play this softball season. After winning only one game against Southeast Conference rival Fairfield over the last five years, Washington went on the road last night and took both halves of a doubleheader at Fairfield.

After both teams scored a run in the first inning of game one, the Demons exploded in the second. Washington scored nine times on eight hits, including two-run doubles by sophomores Alyvia Anderson and Ella Greiner and a three-run home run by eighth-grader Colbie Greiner.

But the Demons would go silent for much of the rest of game two. Fairfield clawed their way back into the game with three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth. Fortunately for Washington, they clamped down, allowing the tying run to get to the plate in the seventh but completing an 11-9 victory.

Colbie Greiner homered a second time in the top of the seventh and finished with four hits. Anderson and Ella Greiner had two hits and a run scored each, while sophomore Bella Salazar worked around handing out seven walks and racked up 11 strikeouts in pitching a complete game.

Colbie Greiner’s impact for Washington would be felt once more in the second half of the doubleheader, as the youngster pitched a complete game in the circle. The Demons scored twice each in the first and third innings and once each in the second and fourth on their way to defeating Fairfield 6-1.

Greiner allowed just four hits and worked around four walks while striking out five. Salazar and Ella Greiner added two hits each. Washington head coach Ben Obermann joined KCII Sports afterwards to explain the significance of his team getting the job done at Fairfield.

“[Fairfield] has not been a friendly place to us over the years,” Obermann said. “We’ve had leads slip away. This is my eighth year [at Washington]. We’ve won once here [before]. Our girls compete. They believe in each other, and we battled. We found a way to close that one out. [It’s a] great sweep for us. We know they’ll come hungry at our place Thursday again, but anytime you can win two on the round, you’ll take it in this league.”

Washington is now off to a 7-1 start to conference action, their best in a decade, while also posting an overall record of 14-8. The Demons are off this evening but will host Centerville tomorrow in a game you can hear on 106.1 FM KCII.
