The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team went toe-to-toe with the top team in Class 2A on the road Monday, but ultimately came up short in both ends of a River Valley Conference doubleheader at Iowa City Regina. The Hawks fell in the opener 6-5. Mid-Prairie got on the board with a single tally in the first, when Brenna Jehle reached on an error and came home on a Sydney Knebel double. The Hawks went up 3-0 in the third on back-to-back doubles from Molly Yoder and Dakota Mitchell, followed by a Regal error. Mid-Prairie cashed in an unearned run in the fifth, when Knebel drove in Sophie Miller, who had reached on a Regina error. The Hawks got their final run on a pinch-hit, solo, no doubt homer off the bat of Kadence Grout in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-0. Mid-Prairie ran into trouble late trying to hold the lead, as Regina rallied for a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, and scored three times in the seventh, including twice while down to their final out, to complete the comeback.

Each team finished with eight hits. Ashley Webb recorded the win for Regina in the circle, giving up two earned runs and striking out nine. She also had the game-winning hit. Knebel took the loss in the circle for the Hawks, giving up eight hits, four earned runs, walking two and striking out three, in six and two thirds. She led the offense with two hits, drove in two and scored twice. Mitchell, Grout and Yoder each had an RBI. The Hawks dropped the second game to the Regals 4-3. With the losses, Mid-Prairie is now 9-7 on the year and 6-4 in the River Valley with a trip to West Branch Wednesday.
