U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley spoke with KCII News about the Conservation Reserve Program Reform Act and how it will benefit Iowa farmers. “The point is to reduce the amount of land that can be in CRP from a maximum of twenty-eight million acres down to twenty-four million acres. Now that’s not the biggest part of it. Another one is now we presently have an eighty-five percent goal that the Federal Government can’t pay more than the average cash rent in a particular county; we’re reducing that to seventy-five percent because the Federal Government should not be an unfair competitor to the family farmer that’s paying cash rent.” The CRP is a bipartisan legislation introduced by New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker and Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley in the Senate that would change the Conservation Reserve Program. The Conservation Reserve Program Reform Act would prioritize enrolling marginal farmland in the CRP rather than prime farmland.
