Washington Demon baseball earned a conference victory in a crazy game against Fairfield last night, defeating the Trojans 9-8 at Dick Sojka Memorial Field in Washington. The Demons scored in every inning but the second, meaning they were able to rally from an early 3-1 deficit and take a 6-4 lead into the seventh.
Fairfield put up four runs in the top half of the final inning to go back in front, but Washington was not fazed. Sophomore Aaron Boone led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and seniors James Strabala and Austin Rebling reached to load the bases with no outs.
When junior Luke Beenblossom’s ground ball hit to shortstop was misplayed, the Trojans committed two errors on the play that allowed Boone and Strabala to score the tying runs. Senior outfielder Isaac Vetter was the walk-off hero the very next at-bat, launching a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Rebling for the winning run.
Washington softball was not as fortunate, falling victim to a grand slam from Fairfield sophomore Lilly Bergren in the second inning and trailing 6-0. The Demons cut the lead in half but never came all the way back, as the Trojans went on to win 10-3.
While Washington drops to 7-2 in the Southeast Conference and 14-10 overall on the softball diamond, Demon baseball is now 4-5 in conference play and 4-12 overall. Both teams are off until they begin new conference series Monday by hosting Keokuk.
