U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley spoke to KCII News about the reintroduction of the Open and Responsive Government Act. “Well, transparency in Government brings accountability. And in a Democracy, everything that the Government does should be accountable to the taxpayers except maybe National Security stuff or intelligence stuff when you don’t want the whole world to know what we know about our enemies or what we’re going to do to fight a war or stuff like that. But everything else, and that’s about 98% of the stuff the Federal Government does, ought to be made public, and transparency brings accountability. And the public’s business ought to be public basically.” The Open and Responsive Government Act aims to restore an appropriate legal interpretation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Exemption 4 on confidential commercial information. The bill also reinforces the law’s presumptions of openness and transparency by underscoring any information outside of the scope of FOIA’s nine exemptions should be publicly available.
