The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team came up short in both ends of a River Valley Conference doubleheader Monday in Kalona against West Liberty. The Comets took game one 4-1 and the nightcap 15-1. In the opener, things were scoreless until the fourth when West Liberty scored twice, they added two more in the sixth to build a 4-0 lead. The Hawks got their one tally in the seventh but the rally fell short. Kiley Collins had two hits, a homer, three RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead West Liberty. Mallory Wulf threw the complete game win, allowing seven hits, one run and striking out three. In game two, the Comets built an early lead, scoring once in the first and three times in the second to go up 4-0. Things stayed that way until the Hawks broke through with a run in the fifth to climb within 4-1. West Liberty poured it on late, pushing four runs across in the sixth and a seven spot in the seventh. The Comets cracked 16 hits in the win. Pearson Hall was five for five with a homer, five driven in and three runs scored. Wulf worked four more frames, giving up five hits and striking out four. After the sweep, Mid-Prairie stands at 12-12 on the year, 8-6 in the RVC. The Comets are 14-6 overall, 9-3 in conference. The two teams face off tonight in West Liberty to wrap up their season series.
