The Washington Police Department would like to remind citizens that Washington City Ordinance says that the use or explosion of consumer fireworks within the City is prohibited. The Iowa Code says in part  “A person who uses or explodes consumer fireworks or novelties while the use of such devices is prohibited commits a simple misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of not less than two hundred fifty dollars.” You can do your part to celebrate safely and keep in mind the disturbance and sometimes anxiety the fireworks can cause your neighbors and their pets. To report the illegal use of fireworks, you can  call the non-emergency number 319-653-2107 with a description of the offender and the address. You will be asked to provide your contact information for reporting purposes and may be required to testify in court as a witness.
