The Washington Demons summoned a spectacular rally to win game one of a doubleheader at Burlington last night 8-7. Washington was trailing 5-1 going into the sixth inning against the twelfth-ranked team in Class 4A when the Demons went to work. After Lauren Hinrichsen drew a lead-off walk and fellow sophomore Bella Salazar reached on a single, junior Emery Walton’s base hit brought home a run.

Freshman Leighton Salazar drove in a run with her second base hit of the game, and sophomore Ella Greiner’s groundout tied the game at 5 before senior Haley Mitchell singled to put Washington in front. Burlington scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth to go back in front 7-6, but the Demons had another rally ready.

After Hinrichsen was hit by a pitch to start the seventh, Walton brought her home with her third hit of the night. Greiner came up with the clutch two-out base hit to drive in Walton for the lead, and Washington held on despite Burlington getting the tying run aboard in the bottom of the seventh.

The Demons briefly jumped in front after Leighton Salazar doubled to lead off game two and scored on a base hit by eighth grader Colbie Greiner, but a two-run home by Burlington freshman Aubrey Hesler in the bottom of the first put the Greyhounds ahead. Burlington broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fourth and would go on to win the second game 9-6.

Leighton Salazar had three hits and three runs scored in the lead-off spot, while Colbie Greiner finished with three hits and three runs batted in. Ella Greiner added two hits, including a double, as well as one run scored and one RBI.

Washington will not be able to win the Southeast Conference, but the Demons are still 11-3 in conference play and 20-12 overall. Next up for Washington is hosting Mid-Prairie tomorrow night, a game you can hear starting at 7 o’clock on 102.5 FM and AM 1380 KCII.
