The next chapter on the diamond will be written tonight when the Washington Demon baseball team hosts the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. Washington comes into the day with a 4-19 overall mark, 4-8 in the Southeast conference after dropping a doubleheader to Burlington Monday 14-2 and 9-2. On the year, the Demons are hitting .229 with 85 runs on 122 hits. Isaac Vetter leads the way at the plate with a .375 average on 21 hits. Luke Beenblossom has scored 15 times and Caleb Zieglowsky has driven in 14. On the mound, Washington has a 6.84 team ERA with a .228 opponent average on 166 hits, 128 earned runs, 114 walks and 89 strikeouts. Vetter, Beenblossom, Aaron Boone and Conner Leyden have all recorded wins this season with a combined 5.96 ERA.
Mid-Prairie is 22-6 this season, 16-1 champions of the River Valley Conference. They swept Durant Monday in Wellman 8-0 and 8-2. The Golden Hawks are ranked No. 2 in Class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Hawks are hitting .297 as a team with 185 runs on 220 hits, led by Karson Grout at .412 with 35 hits and 30 RBI. Cain Brown has scored a team best 29 runs. Mid-Prairie’s staff ERA is 2.82 with a .223 opponent average, 161 hits, 76 earned runs, 81 walks and 201 strikeouts. Golden Hawk starters Collin Miller, Alex Bean, Brock Harland and Brady Weber are a combined 18-1 with a 2.09 ERA. The Demons have won eight of the last 11 contests in the series. The Golden Hawks took it 8-1 last year in Wellman.
