For the first time in decades, Washington County 4-H has a Crop Scouting Team made of 8th-12th graders. This group has been meeting weekly since the beginning of June in preparation for the 2023 Crop Scouting Competition in Boone, Iowa, at the end of July.   They have spent several practices at the Crawfordsville ISU Research Farm led by ISU Extension agronomist Rebecca Vittetoe.  As part of their preparation, they also met with Mike Huston, Territory Manager for Pioneer, where he reviewed the growing stages of corn and soybeans, along with nutrient deficiencies in corn.  The team is made of Allie Whetstine, Stella Janecek, Tate Bombei, Ben Kuhns, and Brock Fisher. The team is led by volunteers Cherry Sandeen and ISU agronomy graduate Hallie Sandeen who is currently working on her graduate research.
