A full day of activities is scheduled in Wayland for their annual Independence Day Celebration.

Beginning at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Lions Club Breakfast will be held at the Wayland Community Center. They will be serving pancakes, eggs, beverages, and more for a free-will donation. The breakfast concludes at 9:30 a.m., at which point anyone in the parade can register and line up.

Parade registration takes place from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Main Street by Miller and Sons Plumbing. Once registered, tractors can line up on Washington Street by The Bar, anyone on a horse will line up on Pearl Street by the Wayland Mennonite Church, vehicles and floats line up near the registration table, and kids will be on the corner by People’s Savings Bank. The parade runs through Main Street beginning at 10:30 a.m.

After the parade, guests have the opportunity for another meal with a lunch put together by the WACO basketball teams. They are serving sandwiches, sides, and beverages at the high school for a free-will donation, with proceeds going towards the basketball program. At noon, firefighter water games will be held for kids on Main Street.

Member of the 4th of July Committee in Wayland, Bev Conrad, shared with KCII an additional activity for anyone looking to cool off during the day. “One of the things that we will be doing extra special this year, we are not able to have the splash pad open as much as we’d like to, but it will be open from 1-7 that day. Just come and enjoy the day, find some shady spot to sit, and you’ll have a good time.”

The festivities lead up to the fireworks show at dusk, donated by the City of Wayland and displayed by Wayland firefighters. To view the Wayland Independence Day Celebration schedule, visit waylandiowa.com or the Wayland Hub Facebook page.
