The Sigourney Savages now know who they will face to start the state softball tournament. Eighth-ranked Sigourney’s opponent in the Class 1A state quarterfinals will be number two North Linn, which is 36-6. The Lynx won the Region 7 championship by defeating Calamus-Wheatland 17-7 Monday night, culminating a three-game stretch where they outscored their opponents 36-10.
North Linn’s success is largely thanks to the highest-scoring lineup in the state. Senior Ellie Flanagan is having a monster season, posting a .552 batting average and 12 home runs while leading the state with 73 runs batted in. Junior Skylar Benesh has been just as outstanding, hitting .500 with a state-high 14 homers and 46 RBI. The Lynx also lead Class 1A in total homers and stolen bases and are second in total RBI.
Sigourney has won their quarterfinal game in each of their last three trips to state. The Savages will have to contend with a North Linn team that won the state title two years ago and had not finished worse than fourth in 1A each of the last five seasons.
