It hasn’t taken long for Leighton Salazar to leave a lasting mark on Washington Demon softball. In just her second season with the team, Salazar already set three school records with offensive numbers that are some of the highest in the state.
Salazar finished the summer with a .550 batting average, currently the fourth-best in Class 3A and ahead of Lucy Libe’s team-record .533 average in 2010. Scoring 58 runs is guaranteed to finish top three in the state and puts Salazar two ahead of Maddie Bohr’s previous program record in 2012.
Salazar ended the season with 72 total hits, five better than the previous single-season high at Washington set by Kaitlin Buchholz in 2013 and currently the second-most in 3A. Salazar’s spectacular exploits in the lead-off spot were a key cog in the Demons’ 2023 campaign, where they went 24-13 and won the most games for the program in 10 years.
