A pair of Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball players have been highlighted as current and future stars by those in the diamond community. Senior Cain Brown and junior Karson Grout have been named to the Class 2A Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Watch-list for their upcoming Prospect Showcase.

Brown, who is recognized as an outfielder, saw a small amount of time there this year, playing most of his innings at first base and doing some pitching for the Hawks. He put together a season that included 37 runs scored, 10th most in 2A. He was a perfect 26 of 26 in stolen base attempts, second most stolen bases in 2A this season for those who were not caught all year. He ended the season with a .314 average at the plate, 33 hits, nine for extra bases including seven doubles and a homer while driving in 25 and walking 11 times. He had a 98% fielding percentage, on the receiving end of 184 put outs this year. In just under nine innings on the mound he had a 1.62 ERA with a WHIP of one, allowing an opponent average of .219, seven hits, three earned runs and eight strikeouts.

Grout, who was named as a utility player, logged his innings on the left side of the infield, primarily at short stop for the Hawks. His .457 average was top 15 in 2A with a .762 slugging percentage, eighth highest. Grout accumulated 48 hits, 20 for extra bases, more than any other player to reach the top 10 in the state in total hits. Grout’s four home runs were third in Iowa and his dozen doubles fourth. He finished the season with 37 RBI, fourth in 2A, 34 runs scored and 18 walks. He was a perfect 20 of 20 in stolen bases.

The Prospect Showcase is scheduled for Saturday, July 22nd at Southeast Polk High School near Des Moines. The event features a pro-style tryout on turf for more than 60 college coaches. Brown and Grout’s season statistics will also be shared with these coaches. This event has been held since 2010.
