As the Sigourney Savages prepare to take on the Class 1A state softball championships in Fort Dodge this week, a spectacular season that includes a South Iowa Cedar League championship and the second trip to state in three years has been powered by some individual performers putting up some of the best numbers in the state.
Few pitchers have been as dominant as Sigourney junior Carly Goodwin. The right-hander’s 0.22 earned-run average is best in the state across all classes. Goodwin has also allowed a minuscule .077 batting average from her opponents, lowest in the state, and piled up 304 strikeouts, best in Class 1A and second in all of Iowa. Goodwin’s 22 wins in the circle is tied for third in 1A, and she has allowed the third-fewest hits and the fewest total runs, earned runs and walks in 1A.
Goodwin’s battery mate has been just as productive. Sophomore catcher Josephine Moore has the most defensive put-outs in 1A on her way to a .975 fielding percentage. Moore is also one of only 22 players in 1A with a .500 batting average, while senior Rain Barthelman and sophomore Ava Fisch both are inside the top 25 in 1A by each scoring 41 runs.
A strong collection of talent has resulted in the Savages scoring the sixth-most runs in the state in 1A and posting the third-highest team batting average. Eighth-ranked Sigourney will have to get past number-two North Linn if they want to move one step closer to a state title. You can hear the Savages take on the Lynx in the Class 1A quarterfinals tomorrow evening starting at 6:30 on KCII.
