The Sigourney Savages wrapped up a spectacular softball season by knocking off Southeast Warren 2-0 in a Class 1A state consolation game yesterday in Fort Dodge. The game was a scoreless tie until the fourth inning, when junior first baseman Erin Dawson swatted a no-doubt, two-run home run, her first homer of the season, to put eighth-ranked Sigourney in front for good.
From there, Savages pitcher Carly Goodwin dominated to earn her 23rd win of the season in the circle. The junior posted another complete-game shutout by allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out nine to shut down number-three Southeast Warren. After the win, Sigourney head coach Shelly Streigle told KCII Sports her team displayed incredible resiliency by putting behind Tuesday night’s heart-breaking walk-off loss to North Linn.
“Losing, and the emotions of [Tuesday] night, it’s really hard to refocus and come back when you’ve had your goals set all year long,” Streigle said, “and refocus that in such a short amount of time. I’m really proud of these girls for doing that.”
The Savages conclude the season with a record of 27-5, tied for their most wins in a season since 2015, and a tie for a fifth-place finish in the state in Class 1A. Sigourney will lose four seniors to graduation in Ryleigh VanDenHeuvel, Rain Barthelman, Macy Fisch and Courtney Hemsley.
