The Sigourney Savages were one of southeast Iowa’s best baseball teams in 2023, particularly in conference play. Sigourney went 13-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League on their way to 18 total wins, and the Savages have received recognition for their good work by earning seven all-conference selections.
That includes sophomore Caden Clarahan, who is named a first-team pitcher. Clarahan dominated the opposition on the mound, posting a 1.47 earned-run average and racking up 87 strikeouts in 57 innings of work. Along with a 7-2 record on the bump, Clarahan was an elite-level hitter, as his .486 batting average, nine doubles, five home runs and 30 runs batted in all paced Sigourney offensively.
Another one of the Savages’ best bats, junior Jake Moore, has been unanimously voted a first-team infielder. Moore batted .368 in the lead-off spot and scored a team-high 27 runs. Junior outfielder Reid Molyneux did his best work at the plate in league action, hitting .353 against teams from the South Iowa Cedar League, while a 4-1 record and 2.41 ERA as a pitcher helped Molyneux to firmly secure a place on the first team.
Senior Ty Shafranek is named a second-team utility player after helping Sigourney win in multiple facets of the game. Shafranek batted .309 and scored 26 runs while going 3-1 and picking up two saves as a relief pitcher, posting 30 strikeouts and a 3.04 ERA in just over 25 innings. Sophomore second baseman Brady Clark also makes the second team thanks to a .315 average and 20 runs scored.
Sophomore Issac Bruns brought some thump to the Savages’ lineup, swatting three homers on his way to 14 RBI and a second-team nod. Fellow sophomore Cole McKay hit .309 with four doubles, 11 RBI and 15 runs scored to earn an honorable mention.
