The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities has issued a heat advisory for today that includes Henry and Jefferson Counties. The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Anyone in these areas can expect heat index values ranging from 100 to 104 degrees. Hot temperatures and high humidity levels may cause heat illness including heat exhaustion or heat stroke. To stay safe during these conditions, drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

If you must work outdoors, schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening if possible. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone experiencing heat exhaustion should be moved to a cooler space and given fluids. If signs of heat stroke are identified, call 911 immediately.

In addition to the heat advisory for today, a prolonged period of excessive heat is possible through Friday evening and additional advisories or warnings may be issued.
