We’re continuing our KCII Top 10 Countdown of the biggest Washington High School sports stories of 2022-2023. At number 7 is Demon softball player Leighton Salazar setting three single-season school records.
In just her second season with the team, the freshman had the best batting average, most hits and most runs scored in a single season in Washington softball history. Salazar batted .550 this summer and scored 58 runs on 72 total hits, including 13 doubles.
The Demon lead-off hitter finished the season ranked top five in the state in Class 3A in her three record-setting categories and earned a second-team all-state selection. Salazar also shared Southeast Conference Co-Player of the Year honors with Saydee Plummer of Burlington after being a key piece in the Demons’ 24-13 campaign.
