We’re continuing our KCII Top 10 Countdown of the biggest area high school sports stories of 2022-2023. At number 6 is 21 local wrestlers qualifying for this year’s Iowa state championships.

The best finish at state belonged to Sigourney-Keota senior Jack Clarahan, who capped off his career by taking third in the Class 1A boys’ field at 170 pounds. Clarahan’s only blemish was a loss in the quarterfinals, but he rallied to rip off three straight wins in the consolation bracket and end a dominant season with a record of 45-3.

Sophomore Reanah Utterback also earned a medal for Sigourney-Keota by finishing eighth at 106 lbs, while fellow sophomore Brady Clark, senior Dan Mclaughlin and juniors Jake Moore and Reid Molyneux also wrestled for SK in Des Moines.

Two veteran wrestlers for Highland medaled at state, as senior Carlos Valenzuela was sixth at 132 and junior Luke Guseman was eighth at 120. Juniors Jack Peiffer and Angelina Roling also made it to state for the Huskies.

Junior Russell Coil brought home a sixth-place medal at 285 lbs for Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, while junior Cole Storm and seniors Kai Malone and Dante Zuniga also competed at state.

Sophomore Gage Samo led WACO by also finishing sixth at 113, while the Warriors were also represented by sophomores Louden Huisegna and Rylee Rice and seniors Bralyyn Wagler, Grace Fort and Drew Diers.
