We’re continuing our KCII Top 10 Countdown of the biggest Washington High School sports stories of 2022-2023. At number 4 is Demon track & field winning seven medals at state.
Among the 30 athletes that represented Washington in 20 different events at May’s Class 3A state championships in Des Moines, two Demons brought home silver medals. Senior Brayden Hartman was second in the shot put with a top toss of 57 feet eight inches, a little less than a half-foot behind the winner.
Freshman Josh Anderson was also a runner-up, finishing the 100-meter wheelchair dash in 19.16 seconds and trailing Mid-Prairie’s Jayden Stafford by only a second and a half. In addition, Anderson was third in the wheelchair 800 meters and fourth in both the 200 and 400.
Washington had two medalists at the girls’ 3A state meet. Senior Grace Voss concluded her career by finishing seventh in the high jump, while freshman Iris Dahl also ended up seventh in the 800 meters.
While they did not qualify for state as a team, the Demon boys did win a third straight Southeast Conference championship this spring and were second in team scoring at the Class 3A District 6 championships. The Washington girls were the runner-up team in the SEC and were eighth at districts.
