We’re concluding our KCII Top 10 Countdown of the biggest Washington High School sports stories of 2022-2023. The number 1 story is Roman Roth winning the individual Class 3A state championship to cap a spectacular season of Demon boys’ golf.
Roth had already shot a one-over-par round of 73 in the first 18 holes at the 3A state tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames on May 22nd, finishing his first round with an eagle, five birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys.
But the junior brought his A-game the following day, bouncing back from back-to-back bogeys to open the second round by piling up another eagle and four more birdies. Roth finished the second round with a scored 70 and ended the tournament one under in total, finishing eight strokes ahead of second place.
The state title added to a brilliant season for Roth. His seventh tournament victory followed up winning sectional and district titles in the previous weeks, and he finished an all-state season with an 18-hole-average score of 73.7.
But it wasn’t just Roth who had a great season on the course. The entire Washington team dominated this spring, winning both Southeast Conference and sectional championships while failing to win only three meets all season.
Despite a third-place finish at the district meet in Pella keeping the Demons from moving on to state as a team, Washington still got strong debut seasons from freshmen Drew Conrad and Rajan Roth, both of whom averaged 18-hole scores in the 80s. Veterans like senior Isaac Vetter and juniors Teague Meyer and Luke Beenblossom also played well from start to finish, with no Demon having a 9-hole average of worse than just over 46 strokes.
Congrats to Roman Roth, head coach Collin Stark and the entire Demon boys’ golf team on grabbing the number-one spot on our KCII Top 10. Find all the stories from the countdown at KCIIradio.com.
