A number of the top softball players in southeast Iowa have been recognized for their outstanding seasons by being voted on to the Class 1A all-state teams by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

That includes three members of the Sigourney team that reached the state tournament and finished tied for fifth in 1A. Savage junior Carly Goodwin was far and away the state’s most dominant pitcher in 2023 on her way to making the first team. The right-hander’s minuscule 0.19 earned-run average was easily the lowest in the state across all classes, and Goodwin led all 1A pitcher with 325 strikeouts, allowing only 40 hits and seven walks in almost 145 innings of work.

But Goodwin wasn’t just dangerous in the circle. The junior had a .433 batting average, nine doubles, three home runs, 41 runs batted in and 33 runs scored while leading Sigourney in total hits. Sophomore Josephine Moore also earns a first-team selection after hitting .460 with 12 doubles, a homer and 42 RBI. Senior Rain Barthleman represents the Savages as an honorable mention, batting .370 with 41 runs scored in her final season.

Two Highland juniors receive third-team all-state honors. Sarah Burton was one of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s most complete hitters, posting a .358 average with four doubles, three triples, four home runs and 21 RBI. Burton’s terrific speed also helped her come up with 34 stolen bases and scored 40 runs.

Husky infielder Payton Brun hammered just about every pitch she saw, hitting.389 with 11 extra-base hits and driving in 26 runs, but the junior could also get moving with 15 steals and made only one error all season on defense.

Lone Tree also sees one of its young stars snag an honorable mention. Vivian Zaruba was one of the area’s premier lead-off hitters. The Lion sophomore batted .403 with 37 runs scored and 30 stolen bases.
