The Washington Demons will have a new man in charge of the wrestling program. Former Washington assistant and former WACO head coach Justin Chambers will become the Demons’ leader this year, replacing the retiring Brent Van Weelden.

Chambers has been an assistant coach for the Washington wrestling team since 2017. He tells KCII Sports a big part of his philosophy on coaching wrestling is best exemplified by one of the best college coaches in the nation.

“Cael Sanderson [from] Penn State this year after the NCAA tournament [was] talking about how much fun their kids have,” Chambers says. “This sport’s pretty physical [and] pretty grueling, [and] even at the highest level with possibly the best coach of all time, [he is] talking about his guys having fun. At the end of the day, if kids are loving what they’re doing and enjoying it and having fun, they’re going to give you everything they got.”

Prior to coming to Washington and after his time in Wayland, Chambers was also an assistant at Columbus. Chambers wrestled in high school while at Pekin before going on to play football at Central College. To hear the full interview with Justin Chambers, click play below.
