Matthew Meisheid, 41, of Kalona, was sentenced Friday morning in Washington County District Court. Meisheid was found guilty in June by a Washington County jury on two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations by Using or Displaying a Firearm. The offense carries a five-year mandatory minimum sentence on each count. District Court Judge Joshua Schier imposed the five-year sentence on each count and determined the sentences would run concurrently. On July 9, 2022, Washington County Communications received a call about fireworks being fired from Meisheid’s residence in Kalona, Iowa. Two deputies responded to warn Meisheid about the Kalona ordinance on fireworks. In response, Meisheid removed a handgun and raised it in the air, causing alarm with the deputies. Meisheid was later arrested and charged with two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations by Using or Displaying a Firearm, each a Class D Felony. On July 12, 2022, deputies executed a search warrant at Meisheid’s residence, and law enforcement seized numerous firearms and a large amount of ammunition. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Communications, and Washington County Attorney’s Office investigated the case, leading to Meisheid’s arrest.
