waco-2

As part of the start of a new volleyball season, the WACO Warriors, Columbus Wildcats and Sigourney Savages picked up one victory each during last night’s action at the WACO Tournament in Wayland.

It took until their last match of the night, but WACO was able to dispose of Pekin in straight sets, winning each of a pair by a score of 21-17. The Warriors were nearly perfect on the night, losing their other two matches in three sets. WACO fell in the first set 21-14 against Centerville but bounced back to win the second 21-13 before being edged out in the third 15-12.

The same set of circumstances occurred against Van Buren County, with the Warriors rallying from losing the first set 21-15 to win the second 21-12, setting up a dramatic deciding third set that VBC barely won 16-14.

In total, senior hitter Marie Farmer led WACO for the night with 10 kills while adding eight digs on defense. Senior middle blocker Emma Wagler had an excellent all-around night, posting nine kills, seven serving aces, five digs and four blocks. Senior setter Meredith Roth handed out 25 assists while also putting up three kills, three aces and nine digs.

The other two local teams to triumph at least once included the Columbus Wildcats, who defeated Louisa-Muscatine 21-7 and 21-14, and the Sigourney Savages, who also knocked off L&M in straight sets.
