After 20 seasons patrolling the sidelines as head coach of the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team, Pete Cavanagh begins the school year today in a new administrative role for the district. Cavanagh stepped away from the program this spring, and stepped into the Activities Director position to start this academic year. He talked with KCII Sports over the summer about the goal of his department, the role he sees extra-curricular activities playing in the student experience, and what has him most excited about the upcoming school year. “I believe it’s extremely valuable in their educational career. To me, it keeps kids motivated, it’s a thing that you can grow certain skills like teamwork, hard work, and dedication. These activities give you lasting memories that you can keep. The opportunities you have being in the play, singing in the choir or playing on Friday nights, those are pretty special memories. I think this fall we’ll build off the success we had last spring and summer. Our baseball and softball teams had a great year. The spring seasons went well. You have the volleyball team that’s coming off of a great year, the football team was in the postseason last year and the cross country team continues building their tradition. As an AD, that makes it really exciting coming into the fall.”

He takes over the position from Tyler Hotz who served the district from spring of 2018 through the most recent school year before moving to become Superintendent at Lone Tree. The first day of school at Mid-Prairie is today, the first athletic competition of the year is Thursday when the Golden Hawk volleyball team hosts Washington. The first fine arts event of the year will be a halftime performance by the Mid-Prairie Marching band during the Hawks season opening football game against Wilton Friday.
