The 2023-24 academic year officially begins today for many area schools, as students return to the Washington, Mid-Prairie Highland, Keota, Sigourney, WMU, Columbus, WACO and Lone Tree Community School Districts.

The Sigourney Community School District is dismissing students at noon today and tomorrow due to the heat, while Lone Tree has its usual 2 p.m. dismissal for Wednesdays. All other districts will be following their normal bell schedule.

While students and staff head back to their respective buildings, AM and FM KCII is teaming up with local businesses this month as part of the back to school safety campaign. Motorists in southeast Iowa are urged to be aware of students waiting for the bus, as well as those walking or riding bikes to school. Drive with caution this school year, and keep kids safe.
