The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves were on the wrong side of their volleyball season opener Thursday, falling in four sets at Keokuk. After grabbing a close 25-22 victory in the first set, WMU fell 25-13 and 25-9 over the next two frames. The Wolves made the fourth set close again, but Keokuk held on to win 25-20.
WMU’s attack was led by senior hitter Audrie Gipple’s 11 kills, and she also had 11 digs. Senior middle Lily Freeman had four blocks to go with a pair of kills, while senior setter Aurey Meeker handed out 13 assists to go with a kill, two serving aces and seven digs. Fellow setter Jessi Renken was also busy with two kills, eight assists and two blocks. Winfield-Mount Union’s next matches are at the West Branch Invitational this weekend.
