The Washington Demons were defeated in their 2023 football season kickoff Friday night, falling 28-14 at Oskaloosa. Things started well for Washington, as junior safety Mason Morgan intercepted a pass on the Demons’ first defensive series, and junior quarterback Logan McDole completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Morgan on fourth down to give Washington a 6-0 lead.

However, the Demon offense struggled the rest of the night. Oskaloosa got a pair of TD receptions from senior tight end Wyatt Grubb to build a 12-6 lead going into halftime, and an AJ Walker rushing touchdown added to the advantage early in the third quarter.

Washington kept the margin to as large as 16 before putting together a late drive that culminated in a Kael Williams rushing score and a Williams reception on a two-point conversion.

The Demons’ onside-kick attempt bounced off one Osky player, but the Indians eventually fell on the loose ball, and a long Walker run set up his second TD of the night to put the game away. After the game, Washington head coach Nick Ehret told KCII Sports that he still liked the performance from his team’s defense in Week One.

“We know that’s going to be a strength of ours,” Ehret said. “They had a couple of playmakers that made some plays. We’re pretty young in some places [and] it showed tonight. We’ve got to get better all around. But, for the most part, I was pretty happy with our effort.”

Washington falls in their opener for the second time in three seasons. The Demons will have their home opener in Week Two, when they welcome Burlington to Case Field this coming Friday night.
