The Washington Demons secured victory in their first Southeast Conference match of the volleyball season, defeating Fort Madison at home last night in straight sets. After Washington fell behind 5-1 in the first set, the Demons used a 5-1 run to tie things up, and after both teams traded points, an 8-2 run pushed Washington ahead 17-12 on their way to winning the first set 25-19.

The second frame went back and forth. Even when Fort Madison had mini-runs of three or four points in a row, the Demons answered with a run of their own each time. It wasn’t until Washington closed the second set on a 6-2 run that they finally put it all together, going on to win 26-24.

Riding high from that momentum, the Demons jumped out to the lead in the third set and used an 8-0 spurt to extend the lead to 21-7, eventually winning the set 25-12. Along with getting a victory in the conference opener, Washington improves to 3-4 overall. The Demons are next in action Thursday against Mediapolis.
