The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves scored a volleyball victory in their first conference match of the season last night. WMU defeated the Columbus Wildcats on the road in four sets, starting the night strong by winning each of the first two sets by a score of 25-19. Columbus claimed the third frame 25-16, but the Wolves came out on top in a close final set 25-22.
Senior hitter Audrie Gipple led Winfield-Mount Union with 13 kills and also finished with 10 digs and two blocks. Wolves senior middle blocker Lily Freeman had just two kills but came up big on defense with five blocks. Senior setter Aurey Meeker posted team highs of three serving aces and 20 digs while also dishing out 18 assists.
Along with a victory in the first match of the season in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference, WMU has now won four of its last five matches to improve to 5-5. The Wolves will next battle Highland tomorrow evening. Meanwhile, Columbus falls to 0-2 in conference play and 2-6 overall ahead of going to the Williamsburg Tournament this weekend.
