The Columbus Wildcats are looking for an important district victory in Week Three of the football season as Columbus hosts Lisbon tonight. The Wildcats bounced back from a Week-One defeat to Mediapolis by walloping Wapello 49-6 last Friday night.
A big reason for that success was senior running back Kaden Amigon doing a whole lot of damage on a few touches. The all-state back and new JET Physical Therapy Football Athlete of the Week rushed for 164 yards and five touchdowns on just nine carries, bringing his early-season totals to 277 yards and 6 TDs.
The Columbus defense rose up for an excellent performance last week, allowing only 48 rushing yards and 172 total yards. Senior Cole Storm, junior Riley Kaalberg and sophomore Tyson Kaalberg have combined to make up a strong group of linebackers, with each posting at least 10 tackles and combining for four tackles for loss. Tyson Kaalberg has also intercepted a pair of passes, while senior Russell Coil leads the defensive line with three-and-a-half tackles for loss.
The Wildcats will look to knock off a Lisbon team that has not allowed a point through its first two games. The Lions have also allowed just over 200 total yards combined in their wins against Durant and Louisa-Muscatine.
Lisbon starting quarterback Dakota Clark has made a strong impact with 256 yards and four touchdowns passing while also running for a team-high 139 yards and two scores. Columbus won last season’s meeting with the Lions 49-20. The Wildcats kick off their 2023 home opener this evening at 7.
