The WACO Warriors took runner-up honors at the Cardinal Volleyball Tournament Saturday in Eldon. WACO cruised through pool play, defeating the host Cardinal Comets in straight sets 24-22 and 21-15 before knocking off Twin Cedars 22-20 and 21-12. But the Warriors couldn’t keep up with Danville in the championship match, falling in straight sets 25-9 and 25-22.
For the tournament, senior Emma Wagler led WACO with 11 kills and added two serving aces, nine digs and a blocked shot. Fellow middle blocker Ally Rinner swatted away a pair of hits and added four kills and seven digs.
Senior outside hitter Marie Farmer finished with nine kills, 20 digs and two blocks, while senior setter Meredith Roth dished out 29 assists to go with two kills, four aces and 19 digs for the Warriors, who now have a record of 11-3.
The Highland Huskies couldn’t find a way to win in pool play at Cardinal. Highland was swept by Van Buren County, 21-12 and 21-17, and by Danville, 21-10 and 21-16. But the Huskies responded to win their final match, sweeping Twin Cedars 21-15 and 21-12.
Highland was paced for the tournament by senior outside hitter Sarah Burton with 11 kills, two aces, 16 digs and two blocks. Senior middle Payton Brun blocked four shots and had five kills, while junior Adeline Krotz finished with seven kills, three digs and a block.
Senior Grace Prybil paired the nine assists she distributed with three kills and six digs, while fellow setter Laney Skelton handed out 14 assists to go with a kill, three aces and four digs. Highland is now 7-10.
