It’s been a season of celebration for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves, with a 4-0 start and a number-three ranking in the latest Associated Press state poll for 8-man football. The celebration will continue with the culmination of homecoming week tomorrow night, and WMU is hoping to keep the festivities rolling on the field when they host English Valleys.
Winfield-Mount Union has been able to lean on the stupendous efforts of senior star Cam Buffington. Along with rushing for a team-high 533 yards and seven touchdowns on 53 carries, Buffington has turned into an elite receiver, piling up 511 yards on 16 catches and 10 TDs, the second-most scoring grabs in the state.
While Buffington is also leading the defense with 40 tackles and six tackles for loss, other stars have emerged for the Wolves. Senior Abram Edwards has four tackles for loss and two sacks, while juniors Cooper Buffington and Lane Genkinger have a pair of sacks each and have combined for 27 total stops.
WMU will be looking to take down a district rival in English Valleys tomorrow, which would be their third win inside District 6 this season. Senior quarterback Myles Grove is the engine of the Bears’ attack, rushing for almost 600 yards and eight touchdowns while also passing for over 250 yards and another six TDs. Junior Keyden Lown has five of those scoring grabs and has put up nine total receptions for 117 yards.
Winfield-Mount Union snapped a four-game losing streak in their now-annual series with English Valleys by winning last year’s meeting convincingly 71-0. The Wolves look to add a homecoming victory against the Bears to their excellent season tomorrow evening, with kickoff set for 7 o’clock.
