The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves punched their ticket to the finals of this year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Volleyball Tournament by winning two out of three pool-play matches last night in Danville.
WMU took down the host Danville Bears in straight sets, 21-16 and 21-19, but their five-match win streak was snapped by Holy Trinity Catholic, as the second-ranked team in Class 1A swept the Wolves, 21-5 and 21-11. But Winfield-Mount Union bounced back and was able to sweep the Lone Tree Lions, 21-17 and 21-5, to earn their way to Saturday’s bracket round.
Leading the way for the Wolves was outside hitter Audrie Gipple, who had 11 kills, four serving aces, 15 digs and two blocked shots total for the night. Fellow senior Kailey Neil had just three kills but finished with seven aces and 15 digs, while sophomore hitter Kellee Milks had a strong night with 10 total kills.
Senior libero Tessa Huston was sharp on the back row with a team-high 18 digs and three aces. Senior setter Aurey Meeker dished out 20 assists but also had eight kills, 15 digs and a block for WMU, which now has a record of 12-9.
Lone Tree was unable to come away with a victory, losing to Danville, 21-7 and 21-6, before falling to Holy Trinity, 21-5 and 21-8. While the Lions fall to 1-14, Winfield-Mount Union gears up for the next round of the Super Conference Tournament tomorrow at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, starting with the Wolves facing the West Burlington Falcons.
