
At Monday’s annual Clipper Classic, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk cross country teams captured team and individual hardware. The Golden Hawk girls won the team championship going away with a score of 21 points, rolling by CCA’s 55. Mid-Prairie’s Danielle Hostetler torched the competition to win the individual title in a blistering 19:33. Other finishers for the Hawks included Brooklyn Stutzman fourth, Abby Fleming fifth, Phoebe Shetler sixth, Greta Sieren ninth, Kendal Landstrum 10th, Annika Poll 11th, Dessa Poll 16th, Kali Miller 21st, Kyrie Poll 31st, Hannah Rodgers 35th, Alaina Safly 42nd, Marissa Parks 59th, and Samantha Wunderlich 76th. After the race, seniors Fleming and Shetler talked about their top 10s and team success. The pair said, “It was important to stay loose, stay relaxed, enjoy the first mile. It was important to push it the second and third miles. It felt sensational to finish like that. This year has been really sensational so far. We have some amazing freshmen and they have really stepped up. It’s a pretty great group of girls. They aren’t afraid to work hard and give it their all, every time, every workout, every race. I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”
The Golden Hawks had the best area boys team finish, placing runner-up with 45 points. The Boats won their home meet with 30. The Hawks were led by a 1-2 punch up top, with Emmett Swartzentruber winning the individual title in 16:55, followed closely by teammate Preston Yutzy in 17:32. Swartzentruber spoke after the meet about the night. “Tonight played out very well. I think most of the guys are happy. We had some young guys really step up and run good times, get good places. Preston Yutzy and I were going for that 1-2 spot. Feel pretty good about getting that.”
Other Mid-Prairie finishers included Max Swartzentruber 10th, Reece Waters 16th, Thomas Flynn 18th, Daniel Rodgers 22nd, Jesse Stultz 24th, Jonathon Pickard 42nd, Sawyer Hough 50th, Ben Lothamer 57th, Adrian Sanchez 69th, Owen Zirkelbach 77th, Brayden Miller 81st, and Evan Reschly 82nd.
The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves were fourth of six boys teams with 101 points. Kohlby Newsom led the way in seventh at 18:07. Other Wolves runners included Gabriel Hemsworth 13th, Ty Scorpil 27th, Bowen Thomson 28th, and Jacob Nelson 58th. The WMU girls did not post a team score. They were led individually by Afton Wilkerson 44th in 26:41. Jana Isanta Vila was 46th and Maggie Hutton 81st.
For the Sigourney Savages, best finish came on the boys side with Troy Klett 14th in 19:25. Dawson Meyer was 66th. For the Sigourney girls, Addison Yates was 19th in 23:37, Reanah Utterback finished 26th.
