U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley spoke with KCII news about the possibility of a government shutdown. Here are some of his thoughts, “Well, it’s pretty simple: it’s going to cost money to shut the Government down, it’s going to cost money to open the Government up. People would say it’s saving money when you aren’t paying the people that aren’t working. But you know, I’ve been involved in other shutdowns, and they aren’t a smart thing to do. And when you say you don’t pay people and you’re going to save money, but what you do is you feel sorry for these people because they aren’t getting paid because of Congress screwing up, and so then you feel sorry for them, and you pay them anyway. And the Government is supposed to be a service for people, but you can’t service the people if the Government isn’t functioning.” A government shutdown would disrupt the U.S. economy and the lives of millions of Americans who work for the government or rely on federal services — from the military personnel and air traffic controllers who would be asked to work without pay to some 7 million people in the Women, Infants, and Children program, according to the White House.
